Disorders of Labradors

Labrador Retrievers are generally a healthy breed. However, they do have some disorders that are obtained genetically and are most likely noticed. Owners can ask their breeders before getting the pup, if there are illnesses that occur in their stock. Here are some of the disorders to watch out:

1. Muscular Dystrophy. This disorder rarely occurs to Labradors but is very fatal once your pet is hit. This is the progressive degeneration of the muscles that causes weakness to the dog.

2. Limber Tail Syndrome. This is also knows as water tail or broken tail. This is very painful distress of the tail. This is due usually to activities that involve a lot of action or sudden temperature shock. This disorder heals after a day or two. The tail is held limply, and similar to the symptoms of a fracture, there is a small swelling at the base of the tail.

3. Gastric Torsion. This is also called or known as a "bloat". This is a swelling of the abdomen due to a painful twisting in the stomach and trapping the contents of the stomach, thus the swelling. This disorder of situation needs immediate veterinary care.

4. Exercise Intolerance and Collapse. This condition is due to excessive activity and excitable dogs, especially the young ones. They experience weakness and collapse after a strenuous activity. The young one has lost its balance, especially in the hind legs, and also if there is a sudden change in temperature. Most of the dogs regain their strength immediately but they should not be allowed in strenuous activity or competition.

5. Elbow Dysplasia. Labradors experience pain, weakness and changes in movement. The three bones that make up the elbows of the dog degenerate.
